Shortlisted for the 2022 Booker Prize – “Everett masterfully navigates between unspeakable horror and stunning comedy.” – The New York Times Book Review
USA, early 21st century: In the small Southern town of Money, several men are murdered: mostly fat, dim-witted, and white. Next to each body turns up a corpse bearing the features of Emmett Till, a Black boy lynched in 1955. Two African-American detectives investigate, but the sheriff and a group of stubborn rednecks put up fierce resistance. As the murders spread across America, the detectives seek answers in the archives of Mama Z, who has been keeping a record of Money's lynching victims for decades. A breathtaking blend of parody and hardboiled thriller, unlike anything seen before in American literature.
